First stage of Underpainting Process

Here are a few things that I have started this week.

These photographs show the stages where tonal values and compositional elements are firmly established. I have used Raw Umber for these three although I usually prefer Burnt Umber as it gives the painting an inherent warmth.

Line drawing 80x60cm

Blocking in tones with diluted washes 60x80cm

Washes worked up to an accurate tonal study. 50x50cm

Image ready for opaque underpainting stage. I will repaint the whole image using this wash underpainting as a guide for a more solid rendering. Much of the shadow areas will be used in the final painting.
